Due to the sensitive and graphic nature of the material, this week’s CUEAFS screening will be an exclusive one for members only.
Introducing the genre of pink cinema ( pinku eiga ):
‘Pink films are 35mm Japanese erotic films that appeared in the early 1960s and subsequently dominated the domestic market for the next two decades. As noted predominantly in the case of director Koji Wakamatsu, pink films used sadomasochistic and other fantasies as allegories for various –leftist– political themes.’
As Andrew Grossman states, “there had been no more conspicuous lacuna in the West’s knowledge of Japanese genre filmmaking than the softcore pink film ( pinku eiga ), whose daunting superabundance, destitute budgets, anarchic politics, and penchant for rough sadomasochism had traditionally impeded any wide distribution abroad”.
The CUEAFS team would like to thank Dr John Berra for taking the time to give a talk on Contemporary Japanese Cinema – Domestic Appeal vs International Prestige. John Berra is an Independent Scholar and Author who has written extensively about American and Japanese Independent Cinema. His most recent book is ‘The Directory of World Cinema: Japan’, to be released this month, in which ‘Achilles and the Tortoise’ is Film of the Year.
In case you missed it, we offer the opportunity to listen to a podcast of the talk here:

世界电影目录年度最佳影片
The third part in Takeshi’s self reflexive trilogy which includes ‘Takeshis’ ( 2005 ) and ‘Glory to the Filmmaker’ ( 2007 ). A darkly humorous study of the often ridiculous consequences for a compulsive artist, which raises questions about the very nature and status of ‘art’ world itself.
The editorial team has chosen once again! George Rippon is the winner of the review competition for ‘Accident’, for which he will receive a ‘Breathless’ DVD. You can read his review here. Enjoy!

CUEAFS invites you to an exclusive screening of the Johnnie To produced thriller ‘Accident’ ( 2009, Hong Kong ). 东亚电影协会诚邀您一同欣赏郑保瑞独家公映影片‘意外’(2009,香港)
Directed with style by Pou-soi Cheang ( Dog Bite Dog, Shamo ) and starring Louis Koo, ‘Accident’ is produced and released by Johnnie To’s production company Milkyway Image, a genuine seal of quality in terms of Hong Kong cinema. At first glance, a seemingly generic thriller following a group of assassins for hire. However, appearances can be deceptive…
