Introducing the genre of pink cinema ( pinku eiga ):

Pink films are 35mm Japanese erotic films that appeared in the early 1960s and subsequently dominated the domestic market for the next two decades. As noted predominantly in the case of director Koji Wakamatsu, pink films used sadomasochistic and other fantasies as allegories for various –leftist– political themes.’

As Andrew Grossman states, “there had been no more conspicuous lacuna in the West’s knowledge of Japanese genre filmmaking than the softcore pink film ( pinku eiga ), whose daunting superabundance, destitute budgets, anarchic politics, and penchant for rough sadomasochism had traditionally impeded any wide distribution abroad”.
