On behalf of the editorial team the decision of choosing a winning review was almost impossible with all reviews being of such a high standard and quality it presented quite a problem. So here is this week’s winning review written by Oliver Sharpe. However we also gave a copy to Carley Marie who wrote an equally comprehensive analysis of the film. Here is Oliver’s review of ‘Sophie’s Revenge’:
‘Conforming to the usual fun-filled predictability of most romantic comedies, the big budget looks and laugh out loud humour of Yimeng Jin’s, ‘Sophie’s Revenge’ shows us that what Hollywood do East Asia can match.
“Laugh out Loud”
Zhang Ziyi plays Sophie, a fanatical young author in turmoil after a break up with her fiancé Jeff (Korean actor So Ji-sub). Sophie spends her day’s obsessing and spying on Jeff and his new film star girlfriend Joanna (Fan BingBing). After a proposal from her publisher and best friend Lucy (Ruby Lin), Sophie plots to separate the new couple, simultaneously writing about the process of her revenge for her next book. However, things start to complicate when she meets Taiwanese photographer Gordon (Peter Ho), who with similar ideas for Jeff and Joanna gets sucked into Sophie’s games. With her scary yet ingenious ideas, Sophie’s character quickly becomes the perfect illustration of an obsessive ex girlfriend, only made more real by her emotional frailty.
Ziyi brings boundless energy to the role and from the start you are thrown into Sophie’s weird and wonderful world. With her morally implicated day dreams and eccentric personality you can’t help but will her to succeed as she creates more and more mischief. The films hilarious dialog and stunning visuals move you with pleasurable ease through the emotional life of a young girl who thinks she knows what she wants. Compared to the East Asian films usually distributed in the UK, Sophie’s Revenge was refreshing to watch. It was a pleasure to see East Asian cinema show what they do so well to an audience unaware of the diversity of their films. It has definitely changed the stereotype that had so easily settled in many minds, a real eye opener.’
Once again thanks to everyone else who posted reviews, it was really difficult to pick a winner and we hope that this standard can be matched week in week out. Oliver and Carley received their prize of a free DVD at last week’s screening.
