122mc – Media & Cultural Fields (Group 7) – Task 4

Task 4 – Popular Film – Using film grammar and ideology

The brief was to show a woman meeting a man. She then kills him and leaves the scene rapidly. Her actions have been witnessed.

We created a story about two electorial candidates (very appropriate at time of filming) who are competing for the peoples vote. One candidate goes to the extreme of hiring a professional to kill his rival. And to make sure she does the job correctly, he also witnesses her commiting the crime.

122mc – Media & Cultural Fields (Group 7) – Task 2

Task 2 – Political film – Trailer

We decided to follow the codes and conventions of the parody and made a trailer that used key elements of this genre. Within the boundaries of the trailer codes and conventions, we explained a story that clearly identifies the hero and what he must do. We also slipped in some in-jokes that relate to Propps idea of characters within a film.

122mc – Media & Cultural Fields (Group 7) – Task 3

Task 3 – Artistic text

We decided to change the norm of the traditional poem and read the poem backwards. This at first sounds strange to the audience but helps them to concentrate more on the words being spoken rather then on the music or visuals.

Show 12 of The rock / alternative show.

An ok show with some good talking points.

Performed with Nick from CCM. Some good banter between the 2 of us, however I decided to include a segment where we both performed our radio advert for the 122mc module live on air. Unfortunately this was not a great idea and listening back to it, it did not sound too good.

Other then that, the show went well and I had some slick transistions between links and songs.

My listeners unfortunately only peaked at 13 and so I have lost some of my listeners. I think this may be due to me not doing a regular show over the last few weeks due to a busy uni schedule.

Keep listening to me 4-6 every monday on www.sourceradio.co.uk

Source Radio

Show 11 of The rock / alternative show.

A very well prepared show with some good stories.

Performed solo, I cut out a lot of the “erms” I had in my last show and the content was a lot more fluent.

Having good entertaining stories helped me keep talking and I was able to stay within my link beds and thus enabling my show to not over run.

I was especially pleased with my ending to the show, where i left myself with around 4minutes to fill. This was achieved with fluidity because I was able to link songs that were just played with contact details for the show, advertising the stations download service and ways to contact the station.

My listeners peaked at 23 and started at 3 at the beginning of the show, averaging around 17 listeners over the course of the show.

Show 10 of The rock / alternative show.

A good prepared show with some good talking points.

Performed solo, I had no dead air but noticed that I used a lot of “erms”, this is something I will need to cut out. Otherwise, kept the chat going well and filled my time up. The subject of Varsity Day especially helped and advertising for Source Radio vs RaW Radio indoor football.

My listeners peaked at 28 and i kept those 28 listeners all show.

Napoleon Dynamite – Opening Credits

I watched this film for the first time recently and was impressed with the simplicity and cheapness of their opening credits. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on effects and computer programmes, the producers opted for a creative touch:

1. The film opens with a plate of nuggets and ketchup with the film studio’s name, FOX Searchlight Pictures, written in ketchup around the plate. Then instead of fades, they use a crew members hand to move one plate out of the way and bring in another and using the same techniques, they tell us who the films sponsors are.

2. To add variety to their way of presenting who was involved in the film, they now have the crew member open a wallet and take out a business card. The card appears blurry at first but as the camera re-focuses on the card, we can see the lead actors name on it (Jon Heder). Then he pulls out another card showing Heder’s face and the name of the film (also the characters name), Napoleon Dynamite.

3. In another sequence, he open a book and takes out a piece of paper. Again it appears blurry until he brings it closer to the camera, and now we can see who was responsible for the casting of the film.

4. The shot of a candy box telling us who the film was edited by looks like the most expensive part of the opening credits as they would have to have actually designed the box and printed it.

5. The Chap stick shot looks tricky as the fingers could get in the way but was a brilliant way to show the audience the people responsible for production and design.

6. They use 2 different pictures to highlight the Cinematographer and Executive Producer.

7. And finally they use stationery – an eraser and pencils to tell us who wrote the film.

I enjoyed watching a different way of presenting the usual information to the viewer, but it is important to realise they were not just random images either. After all, a films opening credits are designed to give the audience an idea of what to expect in a film, this is known as semiotics. And we should be able to read that the various plates and food presented on them are typical foods served in high school cafeterias. The wallet itself contains typical “geek” things (as the student is known as the geek). When the books are open, we should realise they are school text books. The candy box is another typical student food. The drawings are relevant for two reasons, one, Napoleon Dynamite considers himself to be a good artist and again……..doodling is a student thing. And finally the stationery…..well obviously, the film is based in a High School.

  • To gain more confidence
  • To learn some new techniques

What I Got out of the module

122mc – still ongoing

What I expected from the module

  • To put theories into practice
  • To learn more theories and key theorists and their work
  • engage in discussions

What I Got out of the module

  • I was able to apply my work from 120mc,100mc and 123mc  into this module to help understand the principles
  • Extensive reading into some new theories
  • Making a variety of media artefact’s and putting my skills to good use

I think overall, for my first year, I have been doing well. Most of the theories were new to me or I knew just the basics and I have worked hard to understand them as best as I can. To help with the task of learning all the new theories and the theorists they belong to, I created a list with a brief description. This helped me immensely in the first term and helped everything I had learnt fall into place (around week 5-6). The list is on-going but unfortunately I did not find time in the 2nd term to keep it up to date but I hope to complete it through the summer.

I have noticed that a lot of the time when group work occurs, I tend to go into a leading role especially when the group has no-one to lead. My organisational skills helped me to keep the team(s) on schedule and allowed the group time to meet up and discuss.
